Feature/introduce label functions

@bernd, @alessio.fumagalli, I added a first draft of the label functions that could be used in the plot script. The second commit uses them in the single case. @alessio.fumagalli, you can have a look at if this makes sense when you dig into making the plots nicer. If you like it we can merge it.
