Until changing this annoying strange behavior get used to press immediately after starting the editor the key \<ESC\>. Else you easily destroy your files. The behavior in the windows-terminal is better. If you accidentely changed something do press \<ESC\> \<u\> the key \<u\> will undo changes it can be pressed multiple times. If you did to many times undo \<CTRL-r\> for redo is your friend.

Vim has an embedded help system and within also a vim-tutor to learn the basics.
|
|
|
Just enter `:help` or `\<ESC>:help` after starting vim and read carefully and make your experiments and experience.
